    On Ink Paintings of Zen

“The realm of art seems near at hand yet maybe above the reach even after a lifelong pursuit.” - Pan Tianshou

Chinese ancients divided paintings into various styles such as Shen (God-like), Yi (untrammeled), Miao (wonderful) and Neng (able). Only those fitted the criteria were classified as top grade. However, as the benevolent see benevolence and the wise see wisdom, different people have different ideas about what considered to be elegant or vulgar. Exactly comply with the criteria may make painting hard to begin or even fail to do it. The course of painting is at the same time a search for oneself. Some people say that good works are created with a state of integration of the Self with Nature and a well-thought-out plan, which, for me, is a little unreliable since it depends greatly on your luck and understanding. I do Zen paintings almost the same way as common people practicing Yoga. We never take the trouble to consider Yoga’s profound implication, nor its origin- China or India. It does not demand the physical power as doing gymnastics, nor is it as violent as Wushu (martial art) or as respectful and cautious as worship. We enjoy doing it because it makes our body and mind feel relaxed and free. We find a simple, quiet harmony in the rhythm. Zhou Sicong, once talked about art creation, said that her best state was holding the brush without knowing what to paint. Always in that circumstance had she painted her most satisfied works. It is the heart that decides.
